Today’s poem is a ballad with the topic of “hero/heroine”, and my…what a tale you shall hear!
Ok, it’s not really *that* great, but it was the best I could come up with this evening and during commercial breaks on Gotham and Star Wars: Rebels. (What can I say? I was looking for inspiration, ha!)
Anyways, the tale of John the Office Worker and his rescue cat, Fluffy, are the stars of today’s poem! I’ll admit I was inspired to write about a cat simply because one walked by my house while I was out getting the mail today.
Enjoy, and don’t forget to tune in tomorrow for a prose poem!
Eat, Sleep, Repeat
John is just your average man
Living his daily life.
He works all day and works all night
For his kids and his wife.
His day starts early in the morn,
The sun is barely up.
He drives through traffic thick and thin
Holding his coffee cup.
The day is long, the work is hard,
There is no end in sight.
He drives back home, longing to sleep
For once this peaceful night.
He goes back home, and through the door
His wife and kids will greet.
Dinner, then chores, then off to bed,
To eat, sleep, and repeat.
Eat, sleep, repeat.
Eat, sleep, repeat.
But one day John wakes up and finds
His day is just not right.
The toast is burned, the coffee cold.
Traffic? No end in sight.
He goes to work extremely late.
His luck has just gone bad.
The place is closed for holiday.
John forgot! (Boy, he’s mad!)
His morning a waste, his mood gone,
John goes back to his car.
But before he gets in, a sight
Catches him from afar.
Alone and lost, a cat walks by.
She strolls towards the street
To find a mouse and chase it down
And then eat, sleep, repeat.
Eat, sleep, repeat.
Eat, sleep, repeat.
The mouse is found and off she goes
To chase it for her meal.
She doesn’t pay attention, though,
To the coming van wheel.
Towards the street the cat does go
Not noticing the van
That’s headed towards her right now.
Save her, John, from the man!
John sees the cat and off he runs
To save her from a squish.
He hopes to save her from the van
(Or at least he can wish…)
Fast and careful, he gets the cat
And sweeps her off her feet.
It’s all in a day’s work for him
To eat, sleep and repeat.
Eat, sleep, repeat.
Eat, sleep, repeat.
The cat goes home with John that day.
A surprise she is for sure!
Through the door he walks with a grin,
The cat giving a purr.
The kids go wild at the surprise.
The cat must have a name!
“Fluffy!” they say, and the cat grins,
Enjoying the new found fame.
At home John recounts his story
About his day so far.
The food, the closed doors, the traffic,
The cat, the mouse, the car.
“A hero” they call John that day
And praise his daring feat.
“It’s all in a day’s work,” he says,
To eat, sleep, and repeat.
Eat, sleep, repeat.
Eat, sleep, repeat.
